Alice Walton, daughter of the late Sam Walton-founder of Wal-Mart-was pulled over in the Dallas-Fort Worth area recently on suspicion of DWI.
The 62-year-old Walton, who is apparently the 10th richest person in America according to Forbes magazine, was arrested on a DWI charge and reportedly spent her birthday night in jail. Sources said Walton was arrested after she refused to take a breathalyzer test, and that she was released on Saturday morning after she posted $1,000 bond.
Walton was previously convicted of DWI in 1998 in Springdale, Arkansas. In that incident, she had reportedly driving her Porsche when she struck and killed a 50-year-old mother of two. Upon her arrested, she reported yelled at a police officer, "I'm Alice Walton, bitch!" She was never charged in that incident.
When police pull somebody over on suspicion of DWI, they are looking to gather as much evidence as possible against you. The way you drive, act, smell, speak, and interact will all be scrutinized. Police are required to follow proper procedures when they pull somebody over on suspicion of DWI. Before giving a breathalyzer test, police are required to inform a suspect of their right and the consequences if they refuse to take the test. Under Texas law, a driver is able to refuse a breath test. The benefit of refusing to take the test is that police will not have the breathalyzer test as evidence against you, and your refusal may not be used as evidence against you. Refusing to take a breath test could result in an automatic driver's license suspension, though.
