An investigator with the Harris County District Attorney's Office was arrested in Dallas this weekend on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
The 43-year-old man came to police officers' attention after he allegedly struck two parked cars and then tried to flee the scene. He did not get far - he quickly lost control of his vehicle, struck a fence and overturned his car. Witnesses saw the entire incident as it unfolded.
The man has now been charged with aDWI and failure to stop and give information.
The man is a fraud investigator for the district attorney in Harris County, the county in which Houston is located. Given that the man regularly worked with court officials and lawyers, it is fair to say he knew that driving while intoxicated is illegal. Furthermore, he was likely aware of the penalties, both legal and social, that accompany a DWI. That he has nonetheless been charged with a DWI shows that anyone can find themselves accused of driving while intoxicated.
When you are pulled over by a law enforcement officer, it is easy to feel like it's all over and you have no options. This is not true. Law enforcement officers have policies and procedures they must follow. If they do not, their missteps could favorably impact your case. Speaking with an attorney who often works with those accused of drunk driving could illuminate the best options for your defense. It might also help you feel more proactive. Your local bar agency will probably be able to put you in touch with this type of lawyer.
