A 48-year-old Texas man who pleaded guilty to his seventh DWI now faces 99 years in prison.
According to the Austin American Statesman, the man was convicted of felony DWI and using a vehicle as a deadly weapon by a Williamson jury after two days of testimony.
The conviction reportedly arose from an incident last October, when a Williamson County patrol deputy witness the man running his vehicle in circles near Highway 79 in Hutto. The man, who had been drinking at the Hutto Old Time Days Festival, almost crashed into the patrol deputy's vehicle during the response.
During the stop, the deputy conducted field sobriety tests, which showed the man was very intoxicated. A blood sample, taken later, revealed that his blood alcohol content was .25 at the time of the incident, significantly higher than the legal limit of .08.
At the time of the incident, the man had six previous DWI convictions from Brown, Milam, Ellis, Comanche, Tarrant, and Dallas counties between 1981-1994. The man was charged with another felony DWI at that time, marking his seventh conviction. He had also been convicted of seven prior felony offenses of burglary and escape, which landed him in prison in Brown, Lubbock, Milam and McColluch counties. At the time of his seventh DWI conviction, he was on parole for a 30-year sentence arising from a burglary conviction in Bell County
The judge in charge of the case ruled that the man's 99-year sentence wouldn't begin until his 30-year burglary sentence had been served. And because of the finding that he used his vehicle as a deadly weapon, he will have to wait 30 years after beginning his DWI sentence to be eligible for parole.
